Met de introductie van de oorspronkelijke GEL-Lyte zag een toonaangevende serie het daglicht. De GEL-Lyte bepaalde de visuele blauwdruk voor de serie met zijn kenmerkende colourblocking design en reflecterende panelen op de voorvoet voor extra zichtbaarheid. Dit iconische model werd in 1987 voor het eerst geïntroduceerd, en is dertig jaar later terug. De toevoeging van het woordje 'Lyte' aan de naam van dit model had te maken met het feit dat de schoen minder dan 453 gram woog en nu voegt ASICS het woord Hyper aan het model toe vanwege de speciale zool.
